PhDeezNuts

I regret to inform you that I am a podcaster. Even worse, my podcast is called PhDeezNuts. This is an informal, personal journal style podcast where I give updates on my PhD research and tell you guys if I am still alive.

The first episode is out now. You can find this podcast on Spotify.

PhDeezNuts Episode 1: The quest to find out what language Adam and Eve spoke lmao In this first episode of PhDeezNuts, I give you guys some historical context for understanding the linguistic attitudes of the New England Puritans towards Native American languages. Seventeenth-century English Protestants were obsessed with trying to find out what language Adam and Eve spoke, the universal language that was confounded by the curse at Babel. They regarded the biblical stories of Eden and Babel as historical facts, so this is the lens by which they tried to understand the languages of the New World. This resulted in some horribly negative views about linguistic diversity, and I explain why this matters to me as a learner of an endangered language and as a Canadian who is concerned that my country's government has done nothing to address its systemic attempts to eradicate Indigenous languages. PhDeezNuts is supposed to be an informal and self-reflective journal-type podcast to see how my thinking evolves over the course of this PhD, and this first episode was filmed just after completing my first term.
