4 Tips for Emerging Victorious from NaNoWriMo

Every writer is a tragic hero, and their fatal flaw- or hamartia is always procrastination. How many times have you pumped yourself up to write the amazing story that you had brewing in your head, only to betray your characters by abandoning the manuscript a few days later?
Considering these commitment issues, it’s no wonder than thousands of writers log in to Nanowrimo.org each November to participate in the international speed-writing novel competition. It’s the only thing that that motivate them to crash through the first drafts of their 50,000 word novels in 30 days.
As someone who had participated in both Nanowrimo and the summer warm-up events known as Camp Nanowrimo and has tasted victory more than once, allow me o list some helpful tips for anyone who may be considering giving it a shot.

1: Set a Fixed Time to Write Every day

If you’re going to write 50,000 words in 30 days, you need discipline. It’s not an impossible task, as 50,000 words is not really that long. It’s about the same length as those novels we pick up in the morning on our commute to work and have finished by the end of the day, like The Catcher in the Rye. Of course, it helps a lot to sit in front of your computer for a scheduled hour every day to write. Waking up early in the morning is a good idea, as is having a playlist of classical music and a cup of herbal tea on the side. To avoid carpal tunnel syndrome or too much screen time, try carrying around a pocket notepad and pen to write in your spare moments.

2: Cabin Mates and other types of Support Squads

Writing doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. A great way to motivate yourself is by adding some friends on the NaNoWriMo site. You’ll be able to read the synopsis of their novel and track their progress. I’ve made some great pen pals this way. The Camp NaNoWriMo site also has a feature called ‘cabin mates’. You can discuss your plot within your virtual cabin of writers who are into the same genre. There are also plenty of word sprints, conventions and write-ins that you can attend in person.

3: The Adoption Centre

The forums of NaNoWriMo are the place to go if you’re ever stuck. There is a ‘plot doctoring’ board where you can get advice on how to resolve your terrible deus ex machina ending. Another hidden gem is the Adoption Centre board, where you can go to ‘adopt’ characters, plot elements and deleted scenes that other writers left behind. Do you need a catchy prophecy as a major part of your plot? Well you’re in luck. The forums also boast an appellation station for all your titling and character naming needs.

4: Learn some Cheap Tricks to Boost your Word Count

I’m talking about avoiding contractions like that plague, giving your characters several long middle names, and making your chapter titles super long as well. No successful NaNoWriMo writer has ever used contractions before, so don’t feel bad about forgetting what they are for a month. If you’ve pre-written any poetry, consider dropping some in as intros for chapters. It’s a creative way to allure the reader.
Remember that NaNoWriMo is to get you through the hardest stage of your writing process, the first draft. Once you’ve written it, it is advisable to spend a few more months on editing and refining your draft before showing it off to the world. There is a lot of support on the forum for writing resources that can help you with your editing stage. I hope I’ve inspired you to give this amazing writing competition a shot.

Read my stupid fanfiction and help me come up with a title for it please

Now, during the month of November, you may recall that I was very busy. This was because I was writing a novel for NaNoWriMo, which I won! Again! However, there are just a few problems:

  1. The story SUCKS
  2. None of my friends want to read the whole thing except for this one guy in my history class who actually read it somehow without cringing to death. He said it was terrible but that it was still better than anything he could write. Wow... and he's a professional fanfiction writer who actually follows all the givens of the world on which he is writing the fanfiction for.
  3. No one can agree on the genre (Aspen hates it when I call it a fanfiction, but then what else can it be?) some people think it is a speculative fiction or even an alternate history. I think it would be an adventure or dystopian. No one is sure!
  4. The cast of characters is too large and no one can agree on who the main character is (this is how you can tell it sUCkS)
  5. I CAN'T COME UP WITH A TITLE FOR IT
Now, will you children be so kind as to take a few hours out of your life and give me some constructive feedback? You can use the link in the banner above, or you can click here to read it. Feel free to leave comments on the manuscript!

Read on for spoilers on the deus ex machina ending...

Now, I don't really have a title for this, which is a problem. If you read it, I don't care if you stop after the first 3 pages, you HAVE to help me come up with a title. It just really bothers me that it's this 125 page document just sitting there called "untitled", k? In fact, I'll give you a summary of the entire story in about 5 sentences and then perhaps you can come up with a title with that alone:

➤The 5-sentence summary:

Once upon a time there was a super evil person who was suspiciously similar to Donald Trump who ruled over a country that was suspiciously similar to the U.S but also kinda similar to Nazi Germany in some ways idk probably because there were gas chambers and shit. Just like Trump, the super evil person didn't really like Mexicans, so he was mean to them in a way that was suspiciously similar to the internment of Japanese people during WWII but also kinda similar to the Holocaust but it didn't work because everyone rebelled and then the super evil person died. The end involved nuclear weapons too. Lol rip i guess. Ye. Here is the fifth sentence.

Possible titles I came up with:
  • oh wait I didn't come up with anything because I suck
The ending is extremely deus ex machina.

That's all, folks!

The Black Hand Fox Webcomic attempt #2

Forgive me, please. I know it's really dumb. For those of you who don't get it, the strategy that the Allies, in particular, the Canadians, used to seize Ortona in Sicily was called "mouseholding". It's supposed to be funny because in the webcomic, a mouse says it. Not laughing? It's okay. I know I suck. It's not even sticking to the original theme of the webcomic, which was supposed to be WW1 not WW2.

The drawing program is excellent, no installations were necessary. You should really check it out: https://sketch.io/sketchpad/

It is almost as good as DeviantArt Muro! Okay but DA muro will always be the best just because it is made by DeviantArt.

So what else is new? Well, I got into Spyglass, which is like a magazine/newspaper/news website thing at my school. I'm probably going to be writing an article about the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. I also really want to make a magazine quiz called "what ancient civilization are you?" which will be like one of those really lame Buzzfeed quizzes like "which flavor of potato chip are you?" but better because it will be about ancient civilizations not potato chips.

That reminds me of this poll that one of my DeviantArt friends made:

What do you think of when someone says potatoes? chips, food, Incas, Ireland, "whats wrong with this question" or "no"?

Here is the DA page of the person: http://bigsleeves-arts.deviantart.com/

Other Random Things

Is this font legible, BTW? I hope it is. I know my blog uses colors and fonts that can be eye-raping at times.

Okay so, do you guys know what MONTH it is? That's right everyone, it's:

Every writer's favourite month is N A N O V E M B E R. Let me explain, every November, there is a a writing contest called "NaNoWriMo". They have a cool crest with a stereotypical historically inaccurate triggering Viking helmet! See?! :

Visit nanowrimo.org to learn more

The rules are that you have to write a minimum of 50,000 words within the month of November. You can upload a cover and write a synopsis and excerpt too. If you get stuck along the way, there is a forum where you can talk to other writers for ideas. If you win you get bragging rights and discounts on a bunch of self publishing and editing softwares.

The last time I entered was in 2013, when I won. Now that I am participating again after 3 years, I feel so nostalgic talking to my old internet friends from 3 years ago including this one girl in the Netherlands who always writes crazily over the minimum 50,000 every year. I think she does like 100,000 words at least or something. The year I won, I wrote 61,000. For reference, 50,000 is around the length of "the Catcher in the Rye". My first published novel, "Misplaced", was 48,000 words.

So you are probably wondering what my story is about, right? Well, it is currently at 42,000 words and is basically in a futuristic setting where indigenous people are trying to overthrow the government! Beware! And they are basically saving the whole world from a sp00ky tyrant who has come into power. I know that is a very vague plot description. If you have a NaNoWriMo account, you can find me. My username is aztecatl13, and you can read my actual plot synopsis and excerpt. I'm too embarrassed to post it here.

Also, if you're reading this, chances are you're one of my internet friends or acquaintances and I've used you as a character in my ginormous cast of characters. I have most likely changed your name out of respect for your privacy. Some of my IRL friends such as Vickyish have also been included. Even if you think I hate you, I've probably still used you as a character, probably as a villain or something. For example, a sp00ky white supremacist once added me to a really sketchy Facebook group where a bunch of racists who fancy themselves "theologians" discuss Catholicism. Many of them seem to be homosexuals in denial as well, because they will condemn gay behavior and call Justin Bieber sexy (even though most of them are men) in the same breath. I have used many of their personalities to inspire the villains in my story. That is the only reason why I let white supremacists stick around for some time before I block them.

Anyway, so when the novel is done I will probably gather up the courage to post the synopsis and everything here and then ask who wants to help proofread the first draft. I'll probably make a public Google Doc and ask my Frypanian fanbase to leave comments on it as they read the unruly manuscript. Perhaps I will illustrate it like I did with my first novel. My art has definitely improved since then, gawd.

Like seriously. This is something I made in 2012. It is a random Mexican thing:

Look how much I improved in just 2 years. This was one of my very first acrylic paintings during my nascent Norse mythology obsession phase. There's a Valkyrie:

Now this is my art in 2016. I made this a few days ago. It a random Hetalia-styled Indian thing:

Please watch me on DeviantArt and I will love you: http://aztecatl13.deviantart.com/

PS: I have joined the slam poetry club at my school, so I will probably be posting some poems or something soon. That is all!

PSS: Legend has it that Tlacaelel Quetzalcoatl from the Mexica Movement has changed the layout of his blog! http://americanlatinomusuemisracist.blogspot.ca/ no more "Dynamic Views" !

Bye, fam!
